Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann has met with around 50 Boards of Supervisors around the state to discuss how best to spend the billions flowing into Mississippi from the federal government. “What we were talking about is this $1.8-billion the legislature has received, and the fact that counties got about $525-million and the cities got $400-million, ” Hosemann told SuperTalk Mississippi this morning during an interview on The Gallo Show. “We were going over the fact that you can spend it on water, sewer, broadband, certain things, tourism and PPE.” Hosemann says this is money we’ll never get back again.
He’s encouraging the boards to work with the state and pool their resources. “We can really transform the whole state,” he explained. “I was hoping that the Boards of Supervisors would put their money in some kind of income account or put it in the bank, and then come to us and get with our Senators and our Representatives in January and let’s multiply this. Let’s take our $1.8-billion and add their $900-million and come up with something that they could reach further in their planning on. So our outreach for all of the money would be exponential.”
Hosemann says they were very receptive to the idea. “I just think we can put together something that joins all of our state money and their state money to make sure that we have something Mississippi can be proud of. Not next year, but next generation. This is for the grandchildren here. It just fell out of the sky. And we better not blow it this time.”
