The number of new businesses opening up in Mississippi is on the increase. Secretary of State Michael Watson told SuperTalk Mississippi those numbers are tracked through his office.
“Let’s look at 2019, we had about 3,300 net new businesses. Then you look at 2020 and people think, well COVID., that number had to decline. We had 33,000 net new businesses last year.” And they’re 15% ahead of that number this year.
Watson says it’s possible that a lot of folks who lost their jobs at the onset of the pandemic chose to go into business for themselves. He believes when you couple that with their focus on cutting regulations, you’re seeing the numbers go up.
