Today marks the 20th anniversary of the tragic events that unfolded on September 11, 2001, but the impact and the memory of that day continue to be felt in Mississippi and across the country.
As millions looked on from the ground, the United States was attacked as terrorists carried out a plot that left thousands dead. As the hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and into a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, families were torn apart, lives were lost, and the nation’s sense of security was shaken.
On that day, first responders ran toward the chaos and began to rescue those trapped inside the rubble, putting their own lives on the line to help others in need. Today, the nation remembers all of those who were lost on that tragic day 20 years ago, and thank those who defend America’s freedoms each and every day.
Mississippi leaders, beginning with Governor Tate Reeves declaring today as ‘Patriot Day and a Day of Prayer and Remembrance,’ are sharing their memories of that day and posting their commemorations. Below, you’ll find a collection of posts that will be updated throughout the day.

While 9/11 reminds us of devastation, we also remember the incredible acts of heroism performed by Americans—the brave souls on Flight 93 who saved so many lives at the cost of their own & the first responders who ran selflessly into danger. #WeRemember #20thanniversary911 pic.twitter.com/AfK3azb7bz

Today, we remember the sacrifice, bravery, & patriotism that was shown by first responders & civilians alike on 9/11. Terror was responsible for the loss our nation experienced but patriotism & a love of freedom is what helped us heal. May we Never Forget & may God Bless America. pic.twitter.com/ZrLPal1UV4
