The Mighty Roots Music Festival runs Oct 1-2 in Stovall, Mississippi. Blues fans are probably already aware that’s just a few miles from Clarksdale, home to several legends like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker.
John Mohead is one of several acts playing the festival. He grew up in the area, and remembers visiting his grandma’s cabin on Moon Lake, right across from the old Conway’s. “We could hear the music from that. And years later I find out it’s like Frank Frost, Sam Carr, Jack Johnson who were the Jelly Roll Kings. (They) later became world renowned, but they were like the house band.”
To listen to him talk, you can tell Mohead appreciates having had a childhood steeped in such rich musical influences. His own songs are full of references to Mississippi. He even played a few during a visit to The Gallo Show on SuperTalk Mississippi Thursday.
Single day tickets are only $30.00, but you could make a weekend of it and camp out: https://www.mightyrootsmusicfestival.com/
