The Mississippi Gulf Coast is continuing to make its case on why it deserves a professional hockey team.
Back in July, the Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL) announced that the Mississippi Coast Coliseum would be a neutral site location for three games in December, serving as a test run to see if Biloxi is a proper fit for a FPHL expansion team to call home.
“It’s very important that we turn out to support this,” Matt McDonnell, Executive Director of the Mississippi Coast Coliseum said over the summer. “Y’all’s turnout will really be the key to see how we move forward to bring professional hockey back for a full season in the fall of 2022 and the spring of 2023.”
The first of the three games was on Thursday, December 2, a matchup between the Port Huron Prowlers and the Columbus River Dragons. The final attendance landed at 4,230.
The second game will be Friday, December 17 at 6 p.m., and according to Biloxi Pro Hockey – a group dedicated to bringing a professional team back to the Mississippi Gulf Coast – tonight’s game has a chance to break the FPHL’s all-time attendance record.
“It’s a very big day! A record breaking day you could say,” Alexander Davis of Biloxi Pro Hockey said in a text message. “Our first game was a success, and we are looking forward to repeating that tonight with an FPHL attendance record…With walkups, the attendance should be around 6,000.”
The current FPHL attendance record is 5,027.
If you want to be part of what could be a record-breaking night, tickets can be purchased at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum box office or online. If you can’t make it tonight, the last of the three games will be played on December 30.
