If you’re planning to be on the road this Memorial Day weekend, expect to see an increased law enforcement presence on the state’s highways.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol has commenced their 2021 Memorial Day Travel Enforcement Period, which will conclude on Monday night at midnight.
During the enforcement period, troopers will place emphasis on saturation patrols to combat speeding and reckless driving. The MHP urges you to avoid texting and driving or any other distractions that could endanger lives. Also, if you’re planning on drinking over the weekend, make sure you have a sober designated driver.
Safety checkpoints will be established throughout the period to promote seatbelt usage and remove impaired drivers from the roadways.
The MHP issued 5,734 citations with 160 DUI arrests during the 2021 Memorial Day Enforcement Period.
