Congressman Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., is calling on the United States Department of Justice to look into former Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant’s role in the $77 million TANF embezzlement scheme.
Thompson’s request comes after Nancy New, a defendant in the scheme, recently alleged that Bryant directed $1.1 million to go to Mississippi native and NFL legend Brett Favre.
“I urge you to work with the Department of Health and Human Services to conduct a federal investigation into the Mississippi TANF embezzlement scheme that centers around the role of former Governor Phil Bryant,” Thompson wrote to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland on Friday. “The people of Mississippi deserve answers, and accountability for breaking the law must be upheld for all who were involved: especially Governor Bryant.”
State Auditor Shad White had previously identified Bryant as the whistleblower in the case.
