MDOT to close parts of I-20, I-55 over the weekend

If you’re looking to travel on the interstate in south Jackson this weekend, you might want to plan for a slight detour as the Mississippi Department of Transportation has announced maintenance plans for specific parts of the roads.

Starting at 8 p.m. on Friday, all lanes of Interstate 20 westbound/Interstate 55 southbound at State Street in Jackson will be closed for maintenance repair on a roadway dip.

The dip has appeared over time due to severe rain and flooding, leading MDOT to issue a brief closure to level the roadway with milling and asphalt placement.

“We knew there was a possibility that continued heavy rainfall and flooding, coupled with all of the Yazoo clay, moisture, and wet soil underneath the roadway, could result in further dipping of the interstate at this location,” MDOT’s Executive Director Brad White said. “This project is mandatory maintenance in preparation for the permanent repair.”

Maintenance is anticipated to last approximately 48 hours as MDOT crews replace sections of the guardrail, perform bridge inspections, and repair the roads.

“This is one of the most heavily traveled roads in our state and we understand this closure will inconvenience traffic throughout the Jackson-metro area, however, it is needed to keep this roadway safe and passable,” White continued.

According to MDOT, the stretch of interstate sees well over 100,000 vehicles daily. During the closure, motorists should plan an alternate route ahead of time and allow extra travel time throughout the weekend.
