On Friday, President Joe Biden nominated the attorney who represented Mississippi’s lone abortion clinic in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization to be a federal appeals court judge.
Attorney Julie Rikelman is currently the U.S. Litigation Director for the Center for Reproductive Rights and was selected by the President as a nominee to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the First Circuit in Boston.
Rikelman, an immigrant from Ukraine who moved to the United States in 1979, caught the White House’s attention when she argued that Mississippi’s law banning abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy would do significant damage to women’s equality and liberty, as well as the rule of law.
Rikelman’s nomination comes just one month after the Supreme Court made its ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
