Amazon’s first robotics location in Mississippi is now up and running after the company’s official launch of its newest 700,000-square-foot facility in Canton Thursday morning.
The new robotics facility will house the majority of the sortable goods sold by Amazon. Associates will pick, pack, and ship customers’ orders alongside robots, allowing for a more efficient process that will enable Amazon to more efficiently meet consumer demand.
For months, delays have pushed the location’s opening date further behind, with Amazon last releasing plans to officially launch the plant on July 18.
“The fact that Amazon has chosen to invest in Mississippi again is a testament to the unmatched work ethic and dedication Mississippians exhibit each day,” Governor Tate Reeves said when plans for the fulfillment center were announced in November 2020. “We are well-positioned to be a leader in logistics, and I want to thank the leadership in Madison County and at Amazon for bringing more than 1,000 jobs to the area.”
According to Joey Deason, Executive Director of the Madison County Economic Development Authority, those jobs are already filling up quickly.
“I’m going to say there is around 300 to 400 employees out there now,” Deason stated. “I think [the pay] is going to rise as these associates go through the initial work phase and they prove they’re there to work and are good employees.”
