On this day 53 years ago, the infamous Hurricane Camille made landfall in Mississippi.
Camille is one of only five Atlantic hurricanes ever recorded to hit the United States at Category 5 strength. When the hurricane reached the Mississippi Gulf Coast, it brought a record U.S. storm surge of 24.6 feet to Pass Christian.
That record was held until another tragedy took place in 2007 with Hurricane Katrina’s 27.8-foot storm surge.
The total death toll as a result of Hurricane Camille was 256, which makes it the 15th deadliest hurricane in U.S history.
