According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the Pearl River has surpassed the flood stage in the capital city and could have negative effects on homes and businesses in the Jackson and Byram areas.
The NWS is projecting that the river will peak at 36 feet on Tuesday morning, the highest the river has reached since it hit 36.67 feet during the 2020 flood.
Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) Director Stephen McCraney warned that those who were affected by the 2020 flood are likely to be impacted by the upcoming flooding.
Additionally, during a Thursday press conference, Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba encouraged some residents to prepare to voluntarily evacuate their homes.
“We’re calling for voluntary evacuation to take place over the course of this time in the areas that are expected to be affected,” Lumumba said. “We’re working with Hinds County, MEMA, the Hinds County EOC, JPD, and JFD to prepare in advance.”
