It’s been 21 years since the tragic events that unfolded on September 11, 2001, but the impact and the memory of that day continue to be felt in Mississippi and across the country.

As millions looked on from the ground, the United States was attached as terrorists carried out a plot that left thousands dead. As the hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and later into a field in Shanksville, Pa., families were torn apart, lives were lost, and the nation’s sense of security was shaken.

On that day, first responders ran towards the chaos and began to rescue those trapped inside the rubble, putting their own lives on the line to help others in need. Today, the nation remembers the 2,977 people who lost their lives on that tragic day and thanks those who continue to defend America’s freedom each and every day.

Mississippi elected officials have been taking to social media throughout the day to share their commemorations.
