Hall: Southern Miss ‘really close to getting this thing over the hill’

For the second time in three years, Southern Miss has started the season 0-2.

Don’t let that record fool you, though.

In Week 1, the Golden Eagles lost a four-overtime game they arguably should have won against Liberty. In Week 2, they put the college football world on an early upset watch when they went up 7-3 in the first quarter on No. 15 Miami. Southern Miss ended up losing the game 30-7, but if you ask head coach Will Hall, they’re getting mighty close to turning the tide.

“I think we’re a little bit closer than where we were when we woke up this morning,” Hall said following Saturday’s loss. “And I think we’re really close to getting this thing over the hill, and once it gets over the hill, it’s going to go downhill at a high rate of speed.”

While Hall acknowledged the progress his team has made, he realizes that the wins need to come sooner rather than later for Mississippi’s all-time winningest college football program.

“We’ve got to hurry up and get it over and we recognize and understand that,” Hall said. “We’ve got a lot of good kids that are working. They’re doing everything right all the time. We do have talent now. And you know, I think we’re a little closer than we were, but we’ve got to get there faster.”

Next up for the Golden Eagles is a home matchup against their only FCS opponent of the year in Northwestern State. Kick off is set for 6 p.m. CT. The game can be watched through ESPN+.
