Cleveland native turns heads during audition of ‘The Voice’

Blind auditions kicked off this week for the 22nd season of The Voice, with one of Mississippi’s very own wowing the judges during his performance.

Cleveland native Peyton Aldridge grabbed the attention of judges John Legend, Blake Shelton, and Gwen Stefani during his cover of “Can’t You See” by The Marshall Tucker Band.

Legend was the first to turn his chair for Aldridge, even using his only block button of the season to prevent country music star Blake Shelton from selecting the singer.

Following his performance, Legend asked Aldridge what kind of music he liked, to which Aldridge responded by singing a section of Legend’s song “All of Me.” Legend then joined in with Aldridge and the two sang several bars together.

Aldridge also flexed his musical prowess by singing a chorus of Stefani’s song “Hollaback Girl” after the pop singer commented that she could see him performing one of her classics as well.

At the end of his audition, Aldridge selected Legend as his coach for the duration of the competition.

The last Mississippian to win the competition was in 2020, where Meridian pastor Todd Tilghman walked away with the grand title.
