60 years after the largest-ever deployment of the Mississippi National Guard, U.S. Senators Cindy Hyde-Smith and Roger Wicker have introduced a resolution that recognizes September 30 as “Mississippi National Guard Day.”
On September 30, 1962, thousands of service members were called into action to help quell a violent mob that had gathered on the campus of the University of Mississippi in response to the arrival of James Meredith, who officially integrated the university on October 1, 1962.
“Thousands of students of all races, creeds, backgrounds, and beliefs today receive a world-class education at the University of Mississippi because of the courage, discipline, and professionalism of the members of the 155th Infantry Regiment and the 108th Armored Calvary Regiment of the Mississippi National Guard,” the senators wrote.
