Bay Springs High School principal dies in one-vehicle car crash

The principal of Bay Springs High School has died following a one-vehicle accident on Wednesday morning.

According to officials, 49-year-old Russell Jones crashed into a tree around 11:00 a.m. on County Road 17, just half a mile before the Mississippi 528 intersection.

Jasper County Deputy Coroner Jessie Crosby confirmed Jones’ death on Wednesday afternoon and notified the family of the accident.

Prior to taking the position of principal of Bay Springs, Jones served as Senior Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army with two tours in Iraq.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of our principal, Mr. Russell Jones. Please keep our school and community in your prayers,” Bay Springs High School said in a social media post.

The Bay Springs Police Department is currently investigating the cause of the crash.
