The Hattiesburg Zoo also received heavy flooding and damage to a portion of the zoo’s train tracks. Gordon’s Creek, which is adjacent to the zoo, exceeded its banks, causing the undermining of approximately 75 feet of tracks.
“We were sad to discover the washout Thursday morning,” Rick Taylor, Executive Director of the Hattiesburg Convention Commission said. “These storms were unprecedented, and Mother Nature proved to be a wrecking force for the Zoo’s train track. Fortunately, both trains were secured during the storms and did not sustain any damage.”
The train will remain closed at this time until repairs can be made. No animals at the zoo were injured during the storm.
