Previewing Mississippi’s high school football championships

posted in: Mississippi News | 0

It’s officially championship week for public high schools in Mississippi with title games kicking off Thursday afternoon at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford and continuing through Saturday night.

Below is a list of teams vying for the first-place crown in each of the state’s seven classifications:

Class 7A

Oak Grove vs. Starkville

A quarterback dual between Starkville’s Trey Petty and Oak Grove’s A.J. Maddox is in the making in the premier matchup of championship week. Both signal callers, who have offers from D1 programs, have pushed their teams to the victory lap of the season with stellar performances down the stretch.

Having acquired battle scars of a 7A schedule along the way, the Warriors and Yellow Jackets will see who can out “tough” the other to obtain the victor’s crown.

Class 6A

Grenada vs. West Jones

Grenada, a program that had a strong outing in regional play to close out the season, will take on a defensive juggernaut in West Jones that has kept many opponents from reaching the scoreboard throughout the year.

The Chargers, averaging 29 points per game, will be matched up with a Mustangs unit, led by defensive end Isaiah “Lunchmeat” Lindsey, that has allowed under six points per game on the year.

Class 5A

Laurel vs. West Point

After starting 1-5 with one of the toughest non-region schedules in Mississippi, Laurel has won seven of its last eight matches. The Tornadoes are led by a rushing attack starring senior running back Brayden Jordan and an air attack highlighted by quarterback Kobe Pierce.

West Point experienced a similar beginning of its season as the Greenwave started out 0-2, with losses to two teams featured in other class’s state championships (Starkville and Louisville). Led by an explosive offensive attack, West Point concluded the season winning eight of its last nine contests.

Class 4A

Columbia vs. Louisville

In the only matchup between two undefeated squads, an unstoppable force will be meeting an immovable object as two of the hottest teams in the state are set to face off for all the marbles.

No stranger to the scoreboard, Columbia has averaged nearly 40 points per game and has blown out opponents throughout the season with its high-powered offense. Louisville, known for its stout defense which allowed only seven points per game on the year, has even amassed a victory against Starkville, who is competing for the 7A crown.

Class 3A

Noxubee County vs. Winona

In a contest between a battle-tested squad and an unbeaten one, something will have to give when Noxubee County and Winona face off on the gridiron for the state title.

Though Noxubee County has four losses, three of them came from schools from higher classes that are playing in championships this weekend, indicating that the squad is prepared for the match ahead. Winona comes into their final game with a perfect 14-0 record that features a defining win over state-championship contender 6A Grenada.

Class 2A

Charleston vs. Heidelberg

Two dominant teams that have a combined five losses will be meeting head-to-head to prove who deserves the highest accolade.

The Tigers closed out the season on an impressive eight-game winning streak and had a perfect record against regional foes. The Oilers, who have been under new leadership since their former head coach stepped down following an August 2022 fight at a football game not involving his program, won six in a row to land a spot in the ultimate showdown.

Class 1A

Biggersville vs. Velma Jackson

A battle between two of the grittiest programs in the state, Biggersville and Velma Jackson will be clashing with their high-scoring offenses and stingy defenses.

Throughout the year, both programs routinely lit up the scoreboard and simultaneously limited opposing teams from finding the end zone, putting up more than 40 points on a frequent basis and holding their counterparts to single digits.
