It’s officially gameday for bitter rivals No. 16 Mississippi State and Ole Miss in the annual Governor’s Cup held at Trustmark Park in Pearl.
Baseball fans in Mississippi will be treated to a nationally televised broadcast of the ballgame with ESPN2 taking the reigns in showcasing the state’s two Southeastern Conference teams.
Both programs come into the matchup looking to win for different reasons. For Mississippi State (29-15, 12-9 SEC), a victory against the Rebels would help the Bulldogs build a strong case to be a host team in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. Ole Miss (23-20, 7-14 SEC), on the other hand, is looking to get back on track and garner some much-needed momentum to appear in the SEC Tournament after falling flat in conference play in recent weeks.
On the mound for the Bulldogs will be junior left-hander Pico Kohn who boasts a 1-0 record, a 4.50 ERA, and 11 strikeouts this season. Grayson Saunier will take the bump for the Rebels. The sophomore right-hander holds a 4-3 record with a 6.54 ERA and 23 strikeouts thus far.
Ole Miss, just a couple of weeks ago, took two of three from its in-state counterpart for the first time in nine years. Mississippi State won the last Governor’s Cup 2-1 and holds a 10-5 record in games played against the Rebels in the metro Jackson minor league park.
