A Hinds County supervisor was expelled from a board meeting on Monday for possessing a gun in the chancery courthouse.
Following a heated exchange between Tony Smith of District 2 and Deborah Dixon of District 3, Board President Robert Graham called a recess. During the intermission, Sheriff Tyree Jones spotted a firearm under Smith’s suit jacket.
The sheriff proceeded to ask the supervisor if he had an enhanced carry permit, which would legally allow Smith to carry the concealed weapon in the courthouse. Smith informed Jones that he did not have the necessary document.
Smith was then escorted out of the building due to concerns espoused by other supervisors. A vote was held to expel him for the remainder of the meeting.
The next Board of Supervisors meeting is scheduled for Monday, June 3.
