A decorated Mississippi member of the U.S. military has passed away.
The Mississippi National Guard reported that Command Sergeant Major Plez William Summers III died at his home early Friday morning. He was with family at the time of his passing.
Summers most recently served as the installation Command Sergeant Major for the Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center in Hattiesburg — a post he had held since January 2023.
During his career, Summers served with the 1-155th Combined Arms Battalion (CAB) in various positions from about 1997-2010, as Command Sergeant Major for the 1-155th CAB from 2019-21, and the 155th ABCT Operations Sergeant Major from 2021-23.
The Brookhaven native also served in numerous positions throughout the Mississippi Army National Guard. In addition to his unparalleled service with the Brigade, he served on three deployments in support of Bosnia-Herzegovina and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
He leaves a legacy of over 36 years of distinguished military service to the state of Mississippi and the United States. Funeral visitation for Summers is scheduled to take place on Friday from 9-11 a.m. at Riverwood Family Funeral Services in Brookhaven. The service will be held at 11 a.m., followed by burial at Kees Cemetery in Brookhaven
