A homeless man was the person run over in a liquor store parking lot in Jackson earlier this week, according to a local nonprofit.
Shower Power, which delivers hygiene services to people experiencing homelessness across the capital city, identified the victim as Hood Garber. On Monday, the Jackson Police Department reported that a person was purposefully run over by a box truck around 6:35 a.m. in the parking lot of Liquor Connection, just off Interstate 55. JPD confirmed on Friday that the victim was, in fact, Garber.
“Someone said recently that the street can only lead to two things: prison or death,” Shower Power wrote in a social media post. “It’s a cruel world. This guy never saw it coming. He was ‘allegedly’ targeted in a parking lot this week by the driver of a truck and was run over multiple times. He was one of ours. Rest in peace, Hood Garber. One of our very first friends. We’re heartbroken.”
Family members of Garber responded to Shower Power’s post and thanked the nonprofit for what they did to help him as other users pitched in with positive experiences they had with Garber.
“Thanks for all that you guys do and for every blessing you were able to provide for my dad,” Justin Garber wrote as one Jacksonian responded: “I actually met your dad and he met me with a smile and I gave him a little money because it was so hot…he didn’t even ask, he walked into Walgreens and got a drink as I was loading my car…then he waved to me as I drove off…so very sorry for your loss.”
Another user shared that Garber “didn’t bother anyone” and “was always nice,” adding that, “He’s no longer homeless and I hope he’s with Jesus healed and sober.”
An arrest has since been made in the case. Jamarl Chambliss, 35, was taken into custody Monday afternoon and charged with murder. JPD said the investigation is still open, and if anyone has relevant information, to contact Crime Stoppers at (601)355-8477 or the department at (601)960-1234.
