A man has been taken into custody following an animal cruelty bust in north Mississippi over the weekend.
The Tate County Sheriff’s Office reports that deputies executed a search warrant at the residence of Tommy Dean Douglas on Prichard Road in Arkabutla as part of an animal cruelty investigation. During the search, police seized 33 dogs and an iguana described as “large.”
Douglas was handcuffed and charged with aggravated animal cruelty, simple assault on a law enforcement officer, and disorderly conduct for disobeying an officer’s order. He is currently housed at the Tate County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
As for the animals, they are undergoing medical evaluations and being treated by local veterinarians at the Senatobia-Tate County Animal Shelter.
The surge of dogs has brought the shelter to its capacity. No additional canines are being accepted for the time being.
