A Mississippi high school football player is recovering after being shot over the weekend.
The Grenada Police Department informed WTVA that Chance Jenkins was shot at the Pine Hill Apartments around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday. Jenkins, a senior wide receiver and defensive back for Grenada High School, was part of an altercation before the shooting occurred.
Another person allegedly involved in the incident, Lewis Wiggins, Jr., was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. No bond has been set for Wiggins at this time.
Jenkins’ mother, Chan Jenkins, posted on Facebook to let people know her son was “progressing” after the bullet narrowly missed a main blood vessel near his kidney.
“This is a quick update for those of you who are concerned: GOD HAS A BLESSING with my baby’s name on it because I honestly could’ve lost him the way things went!!! I cry every time I think about it!!!!! That bullet just did miss one of my baby’s main blood vessels & his kidney!!! He has been doing very well so far!” a portion of Chan’s post reads.
Jenkins’ mother asked for thoughts and prayers as her son recovers. It’s unclear if he will be able to play football again.
