A Gulfport man is behind bars after shooting his father when a verbal altercation turned violent.

Jeffrey David Swilley, 54, was arrested on Aug. 9 for aggravated domestic assault against a vulnerable adult, felony DUI, two counts of possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, misdemeanor fleeing, and resisting arrest.

According to the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to Cemetery Road in west Harrison County in reference to the shooting of an 84-year-old man. Upon arrival, Swilley was located inside his vehicle before fleeing from law enforcement.

Swilley led deputies on a short chase but was eventually taken into custody without incident.

Responding deputies located Swilley’s father and transported him to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. It was determined that the two individuals got into an argument before the shooting occurred.

Deputies also said Swilley had been previously arrested three times for DUIs.

He was booked into the Harrison County Adult Detention Center and is being held in lieu of a $650,000 bond set by Judge Brandon Ladner.
