After a brief chase with law enforcement, a Jackson man has been taken into custody for allegedly kidnapping his girlfriend.

Officials say that Jackson police responded to a call on Marblehead Drive at 11:23 p.m. Saturday evening. Officers at the scene were told by bystanders that Jamarion Merritt, 22, had abducted his unidentified girlfriend and fled the area. Officers were shown surveillance footage at the location to confirm the report.

According to Detective Tommie Brown with the Jackson Police Department, authorities discovered Merritt was driving north on Highway 49 toward Yazoo City. A multi-agency coordination that included the Mississippi Highway Patrol located the suspect’s vehicle and began following.

Merritt crashed the automobile, which was reportedly a stolen Infiniti, in Yazoo County, ejecting him from the car. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries before being brought into custody.

Merritt now faces counts of kidnapping, simple domestic violence, auto theft, and felony fleeing. No information has been made available regarding the girlfriend’s condition.
