Mississippi Gulf Coast on tornado watch as Hurricane Francine makes landfall

posted in: Mississippi News | 0

The Mississippi Gulf Coast and a portion of south Mississippi are now under a tornado watch as Francine has made landfall in the region as a Category 2 hurricane.

According to the National Weather Service, Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, and Pearl River counties are under a tornado advisory until 11 p.m. as heavy rain and strong wind gusts continue to pelt the Gulf Coast.

Tornadoes typically form in the part of a hurricane where the change in wind speed and direction is largest. South Mississippi, as well as the coast, are seated on the eastern side of Hurricane Francine, where the wind is reported to be the heaviest.

Those currently in the counties under a tornado watch are urged to immediately get to a shelter area such as a safe room, basement, storm cellar, or the lowest building level. If there is no basement, go to the center of an interior room on the lowest level (closet, interior hallway) away from corners, windows, doors, and outside walls.

Ahead of Hurricane Francine’s landfall, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves declared a state of emergency for the state government to deploy resources more efficiently to impacted areas. Track the radar here.
