Missing swimmer’s body found in Lee County creek

The body of a missing swimmer was discovered in a Mississippi creek on Tuesday.

According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Department, at approximately 2:30 p.m., volunteer searchers located the body in Dugger Creek. It was later identified as that of Josh Malette, a 37-year-old who went missing while swimming about a mile upstream.

Malette was reported missing from the area on Sunday, Sept. 15.

“The Lee County Sheriff’s Department would like to send our heartfelt condolence to the victim’s family for their loss in this tragedy,” Sheriff Jim H. Johnson said.

Other law enforcement and first responders that aided in the discovery and recovery of Malette’s body were the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks, the Tupelo Fire Department Swift Water Rescue Team, emergency management agencies from Lee and Itawamba counties, and numerous volunteers.
