Mississippians looking to travel internationally can now renew their passports online.
The Department of State announced its online renewal system launched Sept. 18 and is fully open to the public. Instead of the usual route of printing a paper application and mailing it with a check, American citizens can now save both time and effort by renewing their passports through a secure online portal.
“By offering this online alternative to the traditional paper application process, the Department is embracing digital transformation to offer the most efficient and convenient renewal experience possible,” a press release noted.
Online passport renewals are open to adults who are renewing a regular 10-year passport that has expired within the past five years or is expiring in the coming year. The service is accessible at travel.state.gov with customers going through a short questionnaire before submitting payment method. The new passport will then be delivered through the mail.
The Department of State added that it estimated up to 5 million Americans a year will take advantage of the new service. The processing time for passports currently sits at six to eight weeks.
