An investigation is underway in Tunica County after a fatal round of gunfire was exchanged between a homeowner and a home invader.
On Friday around 1:15 a.m., authorities received a 911 call from a resident at the CottonLand Village Apartments on Beatline Road in Tunica regarding an individual breaking into his residence. The caller notified police that gunfire was exchanged with two individuals being shot.
Deputies and first responders were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, police made contact with one male individual, identified as 46-year-old Mardis Carter, suffering from a gunshot wound. Carter, the homeowner, was treated on-site by paramedics and transported to a hospital in Memphis, Tenn.
Authorities later made contact with 30-year-old Nadarius Joiner, the second gunshot victim. Joiner was treated at the scene, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Carter was not arrested due to the constitutional right of individuals to protect their residences once an intruder has breached the entrance.
Anyone with further information about the fatal incident can contact the Tunica County Sheriff’s Office at (662)363-1411 or Crime Stoppers at (662)910-0400. Any information leading to an arrest can earn the informant up to $1,000.
