A day after a woman was found dead inside her vehicle in Hattiesburg, her husband is being charged with murder.
Kenrod Cartez Echols, 50, of Columbia, was hit with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence charges after the body of his wife, Zikoya Johnson Echols, 36, was discovered Saturday morning.
Officers responded around 10 a.m. to a report of a vehicle wrecking into a building on Park Place Avenue. That’s when they found Zikoya unresponsive with an apparent gunshot wound to the abdomen. She was pronounced dead on the scene.
The Hattiesburg Police Department announced Sunday that Kenrod had reached out to law enforcement and admitted to his involvement in the shooting. On top of the first-degree murder and tampering with evidence charges, Kenrod was also charged with malicious mischief. He is being held at the Forrest County Jail.
