Mississippi Gulf Coast sees first snowfall in a decade

Snow on the beach? That’s the case on the Mississippi Gulf Coast as flakes began to fall Tuesday at dawn.

By 8 a.m., a layer of snow had covered Hancock and Harrison counties, making for a historical weather occurrence. The last time Gulfport had seen snowfall was in January 2014, when about 0.2 inches fell, according to the National Weather Service.

Jackson, Pearl River, Stone, and George counties had all reported some level of snow by 8:15 a.m.

With snow expected along the Gulf Coast for much of the day, forecasts suggest up to five inches could fall. That would be the largest amount since one inch fell in December 1996 and two inches fell in March 1993.

The rare weather, a result of Winter Storm Enzo, has brought with it dangerous conditions. Officials urge people to stay home and avoid using roadways, as schools and most workplaces have closed. A winter storm warning is in effect through Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.
