An investigation has been launched after an officer-involved shooting in Jackson.

On Thursday afternoon, a Capitol Police officer was conducting a traffic stop on McDowell Road when a different vehicle pulled up, and an occupant began firing shots. The officer returned fire, striking the suspect.

The suspect was still able to flee before stopping at the Marathon gas station on South Gallatin Street. He was then taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A K-9 inside the officer’s patrol vehicle was shot during the incident, although no information on its injuries has been released.

The officer was not seriously injured during the incident. No names have been released at this time.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case and will turn over its findings to the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
