Red Cross offering incentives to donate blood in celebration of National Volunteer Month

April is National Volunteer Month, and the American Red Cross is aiming to make a push to drive blood donations during a critical season.

According to Red Cross officials, about 12,000 daily blood donations are needed to keep hospital shelves ready to help those in need while maintaining adequate levels. Type O blood and platelet donations are especially needed to keep medical facilities fully stocked with lifesaving blood products this spring.

With spring travel and activities ramping up, the need for donations is even higher.

“The Red Cross depends on thousands of volunteer donors to collect more than 12,000 blood donations every single day,” Red Cross officials said in a press release. “Blood drives and donation centers also depend on the generosity and valuable time of those who make it possible for the Red Cross to help people in need.”

Donors who give until April 30 will be automatically entered for a chance to win $5,000 and will also receive an exclusive Red Cross t-shirt while supplies last. Three lucky donors will each win the cash prize.

Additionally, those who donate from May 1-18 will get a $20 gift card to a merchant of their choice and will be entered for a chance to win a U.S. trip for two of their choosing.
