A Mississippi man is charged with capital murder in connection with an infant’s death.
Leake County Sheriff Randy Atkinson told Breezy News that 32-year-old Robert Tanner Pigg is behind bars following the passing of an unidentified 3-month-old. The sheriff reports that his department was notified on June 18 that the child had been “injured accidentally.”
Authorities were told that the infant had fallen off a bed and was not breathing. The child was hospitalized at a local healthcare facility and later transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for further treatment. Healthcare officials tipped off law enforcement to potential child abuse against the baby.
After investigating the details surrounding the case, Pigg was handcuffed. Authorities have yet to confirm the relationship between the suspect and the victim, although it’s believed Pigg was living in the same home as the baby and the child’s mother.
Investigators are continuing to assess what Atkinson has called a “heartbreaking” situation. An autopsy on the infant is pending.
