Officials are encouraging Mississippians to enjoy the great outdoors this Independence Day.
The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks has declared the 4th of July a “free fishing day,” meaning Magnolia State residents to cast a rod and reel without a license.
Residents are given a prime opportunity to visit one of Mississippi’s 18 state lakes or 21 state park lakes throughout the day as Americans celebrate the U.S. declaring its independence in 1776.
Wildlife officials in Mississippi contend that free fishing days are an effective way to explore fishing for the first time, or for seasoned anglers to introduce someone new to the sport.
Although anglers are not required to have a recreational license during the special occasion, all size and possession limits, along with reporting requirements, are enforced. More information can be found here.
