The Mississippi Children’s Museum in Jackson has officially opened its brand-new exhibit, taking the celebration of National Dairy Month into July and beyond.

Officials and museumgoers gathered Tuesday morning to cut the ribbon on “May Belle the Cow,” an interactive exhibit that teaches children about dairy farming, agriculture, and nutrition. The exhibit is funded by The Dairy Alliance, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting dairy across the Southeast.

“Dairy farmers in Mississippi are committed to investing in their communities, ensuring that children and adults of all ages understand where their food comes from,” Janna Williams with The Dairy Alliance said. “Through initiatives like the Mississippi Children’s Museum’s ‘May Belle the Cow’ exhibit, they help foster a love for agriculture and highlight its vital role in our towns, economy, and way of life.”

As of this date, Mississippi has 48 working dairy farms with an average of 150 cows per farm. With dairy being a key to the state’s agricultural industry, milk was named the official state beverage in 1984.

According to Susan Garrard, president of the Mississippi Children’s Museum, the new exhibit teaches lessons about dairy farming. It centers around May Belle, a life-size cow replica that allows milking simulation.

“Agriculture is vital to Mississippi’s economy, culture, and way of life,” Garrard said. “It’s so important that children understand where their food comes from and how it fuels a healthy lifestyle. ‘May Belle the Cow’ allows us to teach these lessons in an engaging, hands-on way that makes learning fun and impactful.”

Those on hand for the exhibit’s ribbon-cutting were officials from the museum, National Board Chair of the Dairy Alliance Michael Ferguson, and Moss Point-based dairy farmer Kerra Middleton. Visitors celebrated with free milk samples donated by Prairie Farms, farm-themed crafts, and the chance to meet May Belle up close.
