A portion of the Mississippi State Penitentiary was damaged by overnight storms, according to corrections officials.
The Mississippi Department of Corrections confirmed one unit at the state’s largest prison had its roof damaged by severe weather that crossed the area on Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning.
“A unit at the Mississippi State penitentiary at Parchman suffered roof damage during a storm Tuesday night,” a statement from MDOC reads. “There were no injuries to staff or inmates.”
The inmates housed in the unit impacted were relocated to other parts of the prison as repairs on the unit will soon be underway.
“We were working diligently to assess any additional damages and make the necessary repairs,” the statement continued.
The Mississippi State Penitentiary is located in the unincorporated community of Parchman in Sunflower County. It currently houses around 2,600 inmates.
