MHP reports over 5,000 citations, 3 fatal crashes from Labor Day enforcement period

The Mississippi Highway Patrol has concluded its Labor Day enforcement period, reporting over 5,000 citations issued and three fatal crashes.

From Aug. 28 at 6 a.m. until Monday at midnight, state troopers were out in full force to ensure extra safety on the roadways, according to Capt. Criss Turnipseed.

Turnipseed said Tuesday that the MHP issued a total of 5,152 citations, made 92 arrests for impaired driving, and cited 617 motorists for not wearing a seatbelt. Troopers also investigated 159 crashes, resulting in 43 injuries and three deaths.

The following information on the three fatal crashes was provided by MHP:

Lowndes County crash on Aug. 30

On Saturday, August 30, 2025, at approximately 10:27 a.m., the Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash on Highway 45 and Mike Parra Road in Lowndes County.

A 2018 Honda Accord driven by 19-year-old Amauriah J. Hill of Saltillo, MS, traveled south on Highway 45 when it collided with the left side of a 1996 Cadillac Deville driven by 23-year-old Nicholas H. Jenkins of Columbus, MS, traveling south on Mike Parra Road, attempting to cross the southbound lane of traffic. Nicholas H. Jenkins received fatal injuries from the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Amauriah J. Hill received moderate injuries from the crash and was transported by ambulance to BMH.

This crash remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Bolivar County crash on Aug. 31

On Sunday, August 31, 2025, at approximately 5:00 a.m., the Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to a crash involving a pedestrian on US-61 near Duncan in Bolivar County.

A 2018 Dodge Charger driven by 22-year-old De’Anthony Brown of Alligator, MS, traveled north on Highway 61 when it collided with 34-year-old Edward M. Triplett of Clarksdale, MS. Edward M. Triplett arrived at a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. De’Anthony Brown was not injured.

This crash remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Marshall County crash on Sept. 1

On Monday, September 1, 2025, at approximately 1:51 a.m., the Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash on Highway 7 in Marshall County.

A 2018 GMC Sierra driven by 28-year-old Malcolm Harris of Waterford, Mississippi traveled north on Highway 7 when it collided with an unknown make and model motorcycle driven by 47-year-old Calvin Brassell of Batesville, Mississippi which was traveling south on Highway 7. Calvin Brassell was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.

This crash remains under investigation by the Mississippi Highway Patrol.
