Authorities in the Pine Belt are investigating after an 11-year-old boy was allegedly shot in the head by his 12-year-old sister while the two were hunting over the weekend.
The Jones County Sheriff’s Department reports that the unidentified child was rabbit hunting at his grandmother’s property with his sister and 19-year-old stepbrother on Saturday when he was accidentally struck by a .22-caliber rifle.
Ambulatory services were contacted to transport the victim to Forrest General Hospital before he was later transferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson in critical condition.
Since the shooting was hunting-related, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks has now taken over the investigation.
No further details have been provided about the boy’s status.
