14 fireworks safety tips

Did you know that there were approximately 11,500 fireworks-related injuries nationwide in 2021? Don’t be part of that number this year and take these 14 tips from the Mississippi Fire Marshal’s Office.

  1. Observe local laws. Some municipalities prohibit fireworks.
  2. Use common sense. Always read and follow the directions on each firework.
  3. Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  4. Buy from reliable firework sellers.
  5. Store your fireworks in a cool, dry place.
  6. Always have an adult present when shooting fireworks.
  7. Put used fireworks in a bucket of water and have a hose ready.
  8. Only use fireworks outdoors, away from homes, dry grass, and trees.
  9. Light only one item at a time and keep a safe distance.
  10. Never experiment or attempt to make your own fireworks.
  11. Never re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks.
  12. Never give fireworks to small children.
  13. Never carry fireworks in your pocket.
  14. Never shoot fireworks in metal or glass containers.
