A Mississippi teenager was shot and killed by a former Clarksdale police officer on Monday.
Authorities report that 15-year-old Cornelius McGhee, Jr. died near Park Land and West Second Street.
McGhee’s mother, Jacqueline Rash, told Fox 13 in Memphis that the former officer opened fire on her son after catching the teen in his home with his daughter.
Rash said that the man was upset that her son had been in a mutual relationship with his daughter.
McGhee’s mother also stated that the former officer had previously warned the teen not to visit her at his home and that the officer’s daughter let the teen boy into the family’s home through a bedroom window.
When he discovered McGee Jr. at his house visiting his daughter on Monday, the teen attempted to run away, but the man fired a shot that struck him in his back as he was climbing the property’s fence.
The former officer’s identity has been identified as Andrew Bankhead who previously worked with the Clarksdale Police Department.
Bankhead claimed that he opened fire on McGhee after the teen tried to break into his home.
Clarksdale Police Chief Robbie Linley says the investigation was handed over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation due to a conflict with someone in his agency.
MBI is continuing to gather information regarding the case.
Monday’s incident follows a recent string of gunfire outbursts on Sunday in which 14 people were shot.
