19th annual Jackson Black Rodeo begins this weekend

Despite a prior cancelation and issues including higher costs and security concerns, the 19th annual Black Rodeo is set to still take place at the Mississippi State Fairgrounds this weekend.

In May, the Real Cowboy Association announced the cancelation of the event on social media, saying the decision was due to “previous incidents on the Fairgrounds.” The incident referenced in the post was a mass shooting that took place at the Mudbug Festival in late April.

One week after the rodeo’s cancelation, the association released that the event was back on and would contain higher security to ensure the safety of all attendees.

Since then, the Jackson City Council and the Real Cowboy Association have had disagreements on some of the event’s costs, with the council denying a request for $15,000 in funds to pay for security at the rodeo in June.

After a 3-2 vote on Monday, the city council approved to grant over $10,000 to the event despite the previous decision in the month prior.

Now, the Black Rodeo is set to be at the Mississippi State Fair Coliseum on Saturday, July 16. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the event will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Tickets are still on sale on Ticketmaster, so make sure to grab yours before they’re gone.
