There were two train crashes over the weekend in Mississippi, according to law enforcement who responded to the separate incidents.
The first of which happened in Tallahatchie County, where a train derailed in a rural area on Saturday. An aerial picture provided by the Coahoma County Sheriff’s Office showed train cars scattered, with some of them on fire. The blaze was put out, and no “significant injuries” were reported by officials.
On Sunday, another derailment occurred on Highway 51, north of Sardis. Panola County Emergency Operations cleared the area as law enforcement and the Sardis Fire Department responded to the scene. No injuries were reported, but officials stated that it could take several days to clean up the crash scene.
“This scene has been contained and controlled,” a Sunday evening statement from Panola County Emergency Operations reads. “Clean up phase will now begin and will take several days. Again, there is no current danger to the public. The area will remain restricted during clean up so please continue to avoid the area.”
Both crashes remain under investigation.
