8-year-old dies after being struck by school bus in Madison

An 8-year-old girl has passed away after being struck by a school bus in Madison.

Madison Police Lt. Micah Taylor reported that the incident took place at the intersection of Cobblestone Drive and Rockwood Drive on Wednesday afternoon around 4:20 p.m. The unidentified victim was said to have been riding her bicycle when hit by the bus. 

First responders arrived at the scene and immediately began providing medical assistance to the child. She was quickly transported to the University of Mississippi Medical Center by ambulance but succumbed to her injuries on Wednesday night.

“The 8-year-old Madison resident who was struck by the school bus earlier today has succumbed to her injuries,” a release from the Madison Police Department reads. “Her identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. We thank you for your continued prayers for the family, The Madison County School District, medical staff, and all first responders on the scene.”

The incident remains under investigation and the results of the investigation will be forwarded to the Madison/Rankin County District Attorney’s Office.
