During the 2022 Neshoba County Fair, Attorney General Lynn Fitch talked about what all she believes the state is doing for women in what she described to be a “post-Roe Mississippi,” referencing the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
“We took some great steps this past year. The legislature passed equal pay for equal work for women,” Fitch said. “We no longer have to say that we are the only state without equal pay. Now, we too have equal pay.”
Fitch also highlighted the $3.5 million tax credit that the state legislature allocated to support pregnancy crisis centers and gave an outline of what these centers are doing to help Mississippi mothers and mothers-to-be.
“We have over 30 across the state of Mississippi doing fabulous work, providing resources diapers, car seats, ultrasounds,” Fitch said of the pregnancy crisis centers. “But most importantly, they provide love and compassion to these mothers and mothers-to-be.”
While the attorney general was proud of all that the state has done for women, she believes that there is still a lot of work left to do to ensure that women are getting the very best out of a “post-Roe Mississippi.”
“We’ve got to have the conversation and then the actions about child support and enforcing child support. It has to start now,” Fitch continued. “We need legislation that makes fathers 50 percent responsible for their children. For too long women have born the financial burden for their children, and it is time that we put those laws in place.”
