One person is dead after an altercation between correctional officers outside a Mississippi prison on Tuesday.
According to a press release, the “tragic and fatal” altercation took place outside the East Mississippi Correctional Facility around 1 p.m.
While details are slim, it does note that other correctional officers responded after hearing a gunshot in the parking lot and placed the suspect in restraints.
Upon the arrival of law enforcement and emergency personnel, the suspect was arrested and it was discovered that the victim had died at the scene.
The suspect, whose identity has not been released at this time, is being processed by the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office.
“Our hearts go out to the victim’s family,” the press release said. “[Management and Training Corporation] is committed to supporting them through this very difficult time.”
The identity of the victim has not yet been released by officials.
It’s unclear at this time what started the altercation as an investigation has now been launched into the situation. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case.
This is a developing story.
