Beloved Hattiesburg Zoo jaguar ‘Maya’ faces serious health challenges at 22

One of the oldest and most beloved animals at the Hattiesburg Zoo is struggling with an array of medical conditions.

The zoo’s 22-year-old jaguar, Maya, has been receiving medical care since January for kidney failure and several age-related health issues. Initially, Maya responded well to treatments but has since then developed mobility issues that affect her back and hips. The veterinary team continues to adjust her medications to manage her condition while also prioritizing her quality of life.

“We are exploring different medications and treatment combinations to help manage her kidney disease and alleviate discomfort,” Dr. Julia MacGregor, the zoo’s veterinarian, said. “Our primary focus is maintaining her quality of life and ensuring she does not experience prolonged suffering.”

In January, the Hattiesburg Zoo reported that Maya was receiving intensive treatment for her chronic kidney disease and urgent infection. She was given IV fluids and antibiotics, showing some improvement in appetite and behavior. Originally, the jaguar was being treated indoors but later got access to her outdoor enclosure when weather permitted.

At 22 years old, Maya has already exceeded the average lifespan of a jaguar in captivity, which typically ranges from 16-18 years.

Her care team is closely monitoring her mobility, changes in diet, and overall well-being while preparing for potential hospice care and end-of-life decisions.

“This is a difficult time for all of us,” Stephen Taylor, Animal Curator, said. “Maya has been part of the Hattiesburg Zoo family for nine years, and she holds a special place in our hearts.”

Maya arrived at the Hattiesburg Zoo in 2016 and has been a “staff and crowd favorite,” a portion of the release from the zoo reads.

“She is deeply loved by our team and guests,” Kristen Moore, Director of Wildlife, said. “We remain committed to ensuring she receives the best possible care.”

The Hattiesburg Zoo will continue to update Maya’s condition as her care progresses.
