A bill designed to phase out the 7% sales tax on groceries over seven years has been introduced by Representative Jeramey Anderson.
The tax would phase out 1% every year starting July 2021.
Anderson said, “I will continue to work with the Center for Justice and other stakeholders to develop innovative strategies to bring more sources of healthy food to the state’s underserved areas and to eliminate “food deserts” in the state.”
Anderson also stated that he would continue to fight in a fiscally responsible manner, to reduce the sales tax on groceries, a regressive tax that often puts healthy food out of reach for Mississippi’s working poor.
